Meal plans during Ramadan

April 21, 2024

During Ramadan, when you fast from dawn until sunset, it’s essential to adopt meal plans that provide sustained energy, hydration, and essential nutrients to support overall health and well-being. Here’s a suggested meal plan for Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (meal to break the fast), designed to help individuals stay nourished and energized throughout the day:

Suhoor (Pre-Dawn Meal):

1. Hydration: Start with a large glass of water to hydrate the body before the fast begins. Consider adding a slice of lemon for flavor and additional hydration benefits.

2. Complex Carbohydrates: Opt for slow-digesting carbohydrates that provide sustained energy throughout the day. Examples include:

· Whole grain bread or pita

· Oatmeal or porridge

· Brown rice or quinoa

3. Protein: Include lean sources of protein to promote satiety and muscle repair. Examples include:

· Eggs (boiled, scrambled, or omelet)

· Greek yogurt or labneh

· Lentils or chickpeas

4. Healthy Fats: Incorporate healthy fats to enhance flavor and promote feelings of fullness. Examples include:

· Avocado slices

· Nuts and seeds (almonds, walnuts, chia seeds)

· Olive oil drizzled over whole grain bread or salads

5. Fruits and Vegetables: Include a variety of fruits and vegetables to provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Examples include:

· Fresh fruit salad or smoothie

· Sliced vegetables with hummus or tahini dip

· Leafy greens added to omelets or smoothies

6. Fluids: In addition to water, consider incorporating hydrating fluids such as:

· Herbal teas (e.g., chamomile, peppermint)

· Fresh fruit juices (without added sugar)

· Coconut water for electrolyte replenishment

Iftar (Meal to Break the Fast):

7. Hydration: Start by breaking the fast with a few sips of water or hydrating fluids to replenish lost fluids during the day.

8. Dates: Traditionally, the fast is broken with dates, which provide a quick source of natural sugars to replenish energy levels.

9. Soup: Begin the meal with a warm and nourishing soup to ease digestion and replenish fluids. Opt for homemade soups with vegetables, legumes, or lean protein.

10. Balanced Meal: Prepare a balanced meal that includes a combination of:

· Protein: Grilled chicken, fish, tofu, or legumes

· Complex Carbohydrates: Brown rice, whole wheat couscous, or sweet potatoes

· Vegetables: Steamed, roasted, or sautéed vegetables to add color & nutrients to the
meal

· Healthy Fats: Incorporate sources of healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, or avocado

11. Salad: Include a fresh salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a light dressing to add freshness and fiber to the meal.

12. Dessert: Enjoy a small portion of a sweet treat or fruit-based dessert to satisfy cravings and provide a source of natural sugars.

13. Fluids: Continue to hydrate throughout the meal with water, herbal teas, or fresh fruit juices. Avoid sugary sodas and caffeinated beverages, as they can lead to dehydration.

It’s important to listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues during Ramadan and adjust your meal plan accordingly. Additionally, focus on balanced and nutritious meals that provide sustained energy and support overall health and well-being throughout the fasting period.
